LEATHER CRAFTING

The Hot Press

All our leather products are made of natural cowhide, coming from the Tuscan tanneries, and are coloured with neutral old style "vegetable" colours.

The Leather

The leather and the suede leather is all Tuscan and the type of colouring gives each object the traditional "lived" look, and the particular treatment outcome of our grandparents secrets gives additional protection against humidity and dust.

Each piece is cut and sewn by hand: the objects in fact have slightly different sizes and shapes, guaranteeing the uniqueness of each one.

For sewing we use a dark-colored waxed cord, highly resistant and beautiful to look at.

The hot-Press

To create the impressed images we use an ancient 1800's hot press , inheritance of our grandparents, which let us making more or less marked pressing depending on the product and the style we want to achieve. It is a large machine, a press with a bronze mold inside, which is heated up to a specific temperature and allows us to " burn " the surface of the leather, with an always different heat and pressure depending on the type and thickness of the material. The image is thus " bas-relief ", with fascinating three-dimensional variations that can be perceived both by eye and touch.

The Press Bronzes

The bronzes were bought by our grandparents about 60 years ago at an auction and since then they still work with great results. The three most used with which we create the soft and rigid book covers are the "Giglio di Firenze" (Florence Lily), the "Ballo della Farandola" (Angel's Dance) and the "Baccus" by Michelangelo. With them we create Books, Notebooks, Covers, Pens and Instrument Cases, the Angels Box and the Graphite Box interiors.

We also created new small bronzes, personalized molds with which we realize the decorations on the leather Herbarium, Paper Herbarium and box ribs of Tarot Cards .

With the small Giglio Fiorentino Classico bronze we create the leather patch inside the soft Notebooks and the rigid Notebooks, on their ribs, and on the Graphite Box lid.

With the Mini Giglio bronze we make all the rigid ribs and the patches placed on the Michelangelo Sketch-books pencils.
